There are several ways the county will be collecting money from you, so here’s the list of taxes you’ll pay if you live in Arlington County and the current rates:
Real Estate Property Taxes: Assessed Annually on January 1. Taxes are due on June 15th and October 5th of each year. The tax rate is set by the County Board in April. This total tax rate including a Stormwater Tax.
Current 2010 tax rate: $0.958/$100 Assessed (ex: $600,000 assessment = (600,000/100)*(0.958)=$5,748/year
Personal Property Taxes: Another tax assessed for vehicles located in Arlington County. Assessments are based on the number of months they are located in Arlington. The tax applies to all vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, boats, aircraft, and motor homes. There’s also a $33 decal fee for the sticker you place on your front mirror.
Current 2010 tax rate: $5/$100 assessed value. Assessed values are based on the value of the motor vehicle from the National Automobile Dealer’s Association Used Car Guide.
*Note: clean fuel vehicles will receive 100% tax relief on the first $3,000 of the vehicle’s value and 80% tax relief on the next $17,000 of the vehicle’s value. The portion of a qualifying vehicle’s assessed value over $20,000 is not tax exempt.
Dog Licensing: In accordance with Virginia State Law, all dogs over 4 months old must be vaccinated against rabbies and licensed with Arlington County. The county also prohibits more than 3 dogs per household, unless approved by a zoning administrator.
Current 2010 tax rate: $10/year or $25 for 3 years.
Water/Sewer/Refuse: This does not apply to condos who meter water separately. If your water/trash/sewer are provided by Arlington County, you’ll see the following fees:
- Water, sewer, and refuse collection charges (see rate schedule below)
- A $25 water turn-on fee for new accounts (appears on first bill)
- Extra refuse cart fee ($2.00 per extra cart per month)
- Appliance/bulk metal special collection fee
- $25 water turn-on fee for accounts that need to be turned off and on for non-County repairs
